Overview

Vaginal thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans, which leads to itching, soreness, discharge, and swelling. While oral capsules work throughout the body, Canesten 500mg Pessary provides direct relief inside the vagina, targeting the infection head-on.

What is Canesten Pessary

The pessary contains clotrimazole 500mg, a highly effective antifungal medicine that stops yeast from multiplying. It is inserted at bedtime and works overnight, making it a discreet and convenient option for women who prefer not to take tablets.

Directions

  • Insert one 500mg pessary deep into the vagina at bedtime using the applicator provided.
  • Wash hands before and after use.
  • Do not use tampons during treatment.
  • Symptoms usually improve in 2-3 days, with full relief in up to 7 days.

Side Effects

Most women tolerate Canesten Pessary well, but side effects may occur.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild burning, stinging, or irritation after insertion
  • Vaginal discomfort

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Itching or redness around the vulva
  • Skin rash

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing)

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, stop using the treatment and seek medical advice promptly. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Not suitable if allergic to clotrimazole or other antifungals.
  • Avoid use during pregnancy unless advised by a prescriber (insert without applicator if used).
  • Creams or pessaries may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms — use alternative contraception during treatment.
  • Do not use during your period, as it may reduce effectiveness.
