Overview

When nothing else works, Dermovate is the strongest steroid cream and ointment available to tackle severe skin flare-ups head-on. Containing clobetasol propionate 0.05%, Dermovate is prescribed for stubborn eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis that haven’t responded to weaker treatments.

Available as a cream (light, quick-absorbing) or ointment (rich, protective, hydrating), it delivers intensive anti-inflammatory action where it’s needed most.

Dermovate can only be supplied following a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be provided if clinically appropriate.

What is Dermovate

Dermovate is classed as a very potent corticosteroid — the highest strength in its category. It works by powerfully reducing inflammation in the skin, calming redness, itching, and scaling that cause so much distress during flare-ups.

Because of its potency, Dermovate is reserved for short-term use when other treatments (like Hydrocortisone, Eumovate, or Betnovate) have failed to bring the condition under control.

Conditions commonly treated with Dermovate include:

  • Severe eczema and dermatitis
  • Psoriasis (localised, resistant patches)
  • Lichen planus
  • Lupus erythematosus affecting the skin
  • Other inflammatory skin conditions unresponsive to weaker steroids

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected areas once or twice daily, as directed by your prescriber.
  • Use the minimum amount needed to control symptoms.
  • Do not use on the face, groin, or underarms unless advised by a prescriber.
  • Treatment should usually not exceed 4 weeks without review.
  • Wash hands after applying unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dermovate can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a very potent corticosteroid, the risk of side effects is higher if it is misused, used on sensitive areas, or applied for long periods.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Burning, stinging, or irritation
  • Dryness or itching at the application site

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with prolonged use):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Skin colour changes
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Dermovate well when used exactly as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Not suitable if allergic to clobetasol or other corticosteroids.
  • Avoid use on untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections.
  • Not for long-term continuous use unless under specialist supervision.
  • Not usually recommended for children.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a prescriber before use.

FAQ's

Is Dermovate the strongest steroid cream/ointment?
Yes — Dermovate is classed as a very potent corticosteroid, the strongest available in the UK.

How quickly does Dermovate work?
Most patients notice improvement within a few days, with flare-ups usually settling within 1–2 weeks.

Can Dermovate be used long term?
No — it’s intended for short-term use only due to the risk of side effects. Long-term management usually involves weaker steroids.

What’s the difference between Dermovate Cream and Ointment?
Creams are lighter and suit moist or weeping skin, while ointments are thicker and more protective, making them ideal for dry, scaly patches.

Can Dermovate be used on the face?
Not unless specifically instructed by a specialist, as facial skin is thin and more prone to side effects.
