Overview

Dovobet combines two powerful ingredients — calcipotriol (a vitamin D analogue) and betamethasone (a corticosteroid) — to deliver rapid, effective relief from plaque psoriasis. This dual-action formula both slows down skin cell overgrowth and reduces inflammation and redness, helping plaques clear faster and skin feel more comfortable.

Available as both ointment (ideal for body plaques) and gel (perfect for scalp and hard-to-reach areas), Dovobet is one of the most trusted and prescribed treatments for psoriasis worldwide.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Dovobet

Plaque psoriasis can feel relentless — thickened, scaly, and inflamed patches often flare unpredictably and can be difficult to manage with single therapies.

Dovobet provides a complete treatment approach in one product:

  • Calcipotriol regulates skin cell growth, flattening thick plaques.
  • Betamethasone calms inflammation, redness, and itching.
  • The combination allows for faster clearance and improved skin comfort compared to using either ingredient alone.

It is usually prescribed for short-to-medium term treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis, including scalp psoriasis, where its gel formulation is especially convenient.

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected areas once daily, as directed.
  • For scalp psoriasis, massage the gel into the affected areas — no need to wash out immediately.
  • Do not exceed the maximum weekly dose of 100g.
  • Avoid use on the face, genitals, or broken skin unless instructed.
  • Wash hands after application.
  • Treatment is usually prescribed for up to 4 weeks, with medical review if longer use is needed.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dovobet can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild burning, itching, or irritation at the application site
  • Temporary redness or dryness

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles)
  • Worsening of psoriasis (rare, more likely if overused)
  • Thinning of the skin (with prolonged steroid use)

Most people tolerate Dovobet well, and side effects (if they do occur) are usually mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Do not use if allergic to calcipotriol, betamethasone, or any ingredient.
  • Avoid excessive use, which may increase risk of steroid side effects.
  • Do not exceed 100g per week.
  • Not suitable for widespread psoriasis, pustular or guttate psoriasis.
  • Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised.
  • Limit UV or sunbed exposure during treatment.

FAQ's

What is Dovobet used for?
Dovobet is prescribed for plaque psoriasis, especially when calcipotriol alone is not sufficient.

What’s the difference between Dovobet ointment and gel?
The ointment is best for body plaques, while the gel is lighter and designed for scalp psoriasis and easier application in hairy areas.

How quickly does Dovobet work?
Many patients notice improvement within 1–2 weeks, with plaques flattening and redness reducing further over 4 weeks.

Is Dovobet safe for long-term use?
It is usually prescribed for short-to-medium courses due to the steroid component, but your prescriber may recommend intermittent use for flare-ups.
