Overview

Elocon is a trusted potent steroid treatment that brings fast relief from stubborn eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis flare-ups. Containing mometasone furoate 0.1%, it works deep within the skin to reduce inflammation, redness, and relentless itching — helping you regain comfort and control.

Choose Elocon Cream (light, quick-absorbing) for moist or weeping patches, or Elocon Ointment (rich, protective, hydrating) for dry, scaly areas.

This treatment is only available after a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Elocon

Elocon is a potent corticosteroid, meaning it’s stronger than Eumovate but generally better tolerated than ultra-potent options. It is designed to suppress overactive immune responses in the skin, calming inflammation and irritation at their source.

Because of its potency, Elocon is often prescribed for short-term use on flare-ups that don’t respond to milder steroids.

Conditions commonly treated with Elocon include:

  • Eczema (moderate to severe)
  • Atopic and contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis (localised patches)
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Lichen planus and other inflammatory rashes

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected skin once daily (unless instructed otherwise).
  • Use sparingly — just enough to cover inflamed skin.
  • Do not apply to the face, groin, or underarms unless directed by your prescriber.
  • Avoid long-term continuous use.
  • Wash hands after use unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Elocon can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a potent corticosteroid, the risk of side effects is greater with prolonged use or when applied to sensitive skin areas.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Burning or stinging at the application site
  • Mild irritation or dryness

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with longer use or on sensitive skin):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Increased hair growth
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Elocon well when used as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Do not use if allergic to mometasone or other corticosteroids.
  • Not suitable for untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections.
  • Avoid long-term continuous use without medical supervision.
  • Not recommended for children unless prescribed.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a prescriber before use.
