Overview

Eumovate is the go-to steroid treatment when mild creams aren’t strong enough, but you don’t need the full strength of Betnovate. Its unique formula (clobetasone butyrate 0.05%) provides targeted relief for eczema, dermatitis, and allergic skin flare-ups — calming redness, itching, and irritation quickly without the higher risk of stronger steroids.

Available in a cream (light, fast-absorbing) or ointment (rich, protective, hydrating), Eumovate adapts to your skin’s needs so you can take back control with confidence.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Eumovate

Eumovate sits in the mild-to-moderate steroid category, making it an effective “step-up” when Hydrocortisone isn’t enough to manage flare-ups. It works by reducing inflammation, redness, and itching caused by overactive immune responses in the skin.

Because it’s less potent than Betnovate, Eumovate is often prescribed for longer-term flare-up control or for sensitive skin areas where stronger steroids may be too harsh.

Conditions treated with Eumovate include:

  • Eczema and dermatitis flare-ups
  • Allergic skin reactions
  • Psoriasis (mild, localised patches)
  • Insect bite reactions
  • Sunburn and other irritant-related skin inflammation

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected skin once or twice daily.
  • Use sparingly, only on inflamed areas.
  • Do not use on broken skin, eyes, or the face unless advised by your prescriber.
  • Typical treatment courses last up to 7–14 days, depending on severity.
  • Wash hands after applying unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Eumovate can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. As a moderate-strength steroid, it is generally well tolerated and carries a lower risk of side effects compared with more potent corticosteroids.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Temporary stinging or burning
  • Mild dryness or irritation

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with prolonged use):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Eumovate well when used as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Do not use if allergic to clobetasone or other corticosteroids.
  • Not suitable for untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral infections.
  • Avoid long-term continuous use without prescriber guidance.
  • Not usually recommended for children under 12 unless prescribed.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice before use.

FAQ's

What’s the difference between Eumovate and Hydrocortisone?
Eumovate is stronger than Hydrocortisone, so it’s used when mild steroid creams aren’t enough to control symptoms.

Is Eumovate as strong as Betnovate?
No — Eumovate is milder, making it safer for longer use or on more delicate areas of skin.

Which is better: Eumovate cream or ointment?
Creams are lighter and suit moist or weeping skin, while ointments are greasier and lock in moisture for dry, scaly patches.

How long does it take for Eumovate to work?
Most patients notice improvement within a few days, with full relief in 1–2 weeks.

Can I use Eumovate on my face?
Only under prescriber supervision — facial skin is thinner and more sensitive to side effects.
