Overview

If rosacea flare-ups are leaving your skin red, sore, and unpredictable, Finacea is a gentle yet effective prescription treatment designed to calm and clear. Containing azelaic acid 15%, it works directly on the skin to reduce redness, inflammation, and spots — helping restore a more even complexion and boost your confidence.

Lightweight and easy to apply, Finacea can be used long-term as part of your daily skincare routine. For many people, it’s the first step toward regaining control over rosacea and feeling comfortable in their skin again.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Finacea

Finacea contains 15% azelaic acid, a naturally occurring substance with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. It is commonly prescribed as a first-line treatment for rosacea, especially in patients experiencing persistent facial redness, small red bumps (papules and pustules), and stinging or burning sensations. Finacea works by calming inflammation, unclogging pores, and reducing the growth of bacteria on the skin. This helps improve overall skin texture and reduces the frequency and severity of flare-ups when used regularly.

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer of Finacea gel or foam to the affected areas twice daily (morning and evening), or as directed by your prescriber.
  • Wash hands and cleanse skin gently before application.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes.
  • Improvements are usually noticeable within 4–8 weeks, with continued progress over time.

Side Effects

Possible Side Effects of Finacea (Azelaic Acid 15%)

Most people tolerate Finacea well, but mild side effects can occur — particularly in the first few weeks as your skin adjusts to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Dryness, flaking, or slight skin irritation – often improves with continued use.
  • Burning, stinging, or tingling at the site of application – usually mild and temporary.

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Mild swelling or discomfort.
  • Redness or itching around the treated area.

Rare but serious (stop use and seek medical advice):

  • Signs of an allergic reaction – such as rash, intense itching, or swelling of the face/lips.

Most side effects are mild and tend to ease over time. If irritation becomes severe or doesn't improve, stop using the gel and speak to your prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine. If you notice anything unusual or worrying, speak to a healthcare professional. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

Do not use Finacea if you:

  • Are allergic to azelaic acid or any ingredients in the product
  • Have very sensitive skin prone to severe irritation

Additional cautions:

  • Use sun protection daily, as rosacea-prone skin is highly sensitive to UV light
  • Safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but always confirm with your prescriber
