Overview

Fluconazole capsules are a powerful antifungal treatment that work from the inside out to clear oral thrush.
Unlike topical treatments, they act systemically — tackling the infection throughout the body and helping prevent it from coming back.

What is Fluconazole

Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans in the mouth, leading to white patches, soreness, altered taste, and discomfort.

Fluconazole belongs to a group of antifungal medicines called azoles. It works by blocking the fungus from producing the substance it needs to grow, stopping the infection in its tracks.

Because fluconazole is taken by mouth as a capsule, it doesn’t just treat the local infection — it works systemically (throughout the body), which makes it especially effective for:

  • Widespread or persistent oral thrush
  • Cases that haven’t responded to topical treatments like Nystatin
  • Preventing recurrence in people prone to repeated infections

Many people notice improvement within just a few days of starting treatment.

Directions

  • Take one capsule daily, exactly as prescribed.
  • Treatment usually lasts for 7–14 days, but may vary depending on your symptoms.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with water, with or without food.
  • Always complete the full course, even if symptoms improve earlier.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate fluconazole well, but like all medicines, side effects can occur.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Headache
  • Stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Wind (flatulence)

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Dizziness or tiredness
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Changes in taste

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, rash)
  • Liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain)
  • Severe skin reactions (widespread rash or blistering)

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, stop taking the capsules and seek medical advice promptly. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Not suitable if allergic to fluconazole or other azole antifungals.
  • Speak to your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Fluconazole can interact with several medicines, including warfarin, certain antibiotics, and statins — always disclose your medication history during consultation.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
