Overview

When heartburn or acid reflux keep coming back, it can feel like you’re fighting a losing battle with your own body. Losec Capsules — the original branded form of omeprazole — are a trusted solution that calm excess stomach acid at its source. By easing burning pain, soothing indigestion, and protecting your oesophagus from further irritation, Losec helps you enjoy meals, sleep soundly, and get back to living life without constant discomfort.

At SwiftMedi, your suitability for Losec will always be reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber following a secure online consultation, with discreet delivery to your door.

What are Losec capsules

Losec capsules contain omeprazole, one of the most widely used proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the UK. PPIs work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, providing long-lasting relief from reflux while allowing the oesophagus and stomach lining to heal from irritation and damage.

Losec is commonly prescribed for frequent heartburn and acid reflux, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and for both the treatment and prevention of stomach or duodenal ulcers. It is also used to help protect against ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs long-term.

As a trusted branded version of omeprazole, Losec has built a strong reputation for safety, effectiveness, and reliable relief, making it a recognised first-choice treatment for many patients.

Directions

  • Standard adult dose: 10mg to 40mg once daily, depending on the condition being treated.
  • Take in the morning, ideally before food.
  • Swallow capsules whole with water — do not crush or chew.
  • Duration of treatment ranges from 2–4 weeks for short-term symptoms, to longer-term treatment for conditions like GORD.

Follow your prescriber’s instructions carefully.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Losec (omeprazole) can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, short-lived, and improve as your body adjusts to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Headache – usually mild and temporary.
  • Stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, or nausea – digestive problems are the most common side effects but are generally mild.
  • Wind (flatulence) – some people may experience bloating or excess gas.

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Dizziness, tiredness, or sleep disturbance – these may affect alertness; avoid driving if you feel unwell.
  • Taste changes or dry mouth – usually mild and temporary.
  • Skin rash or itching – typically mild, but seek advice if persistent.

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash.
  • Severe abdominal pain or vomiting blood – may indicate stomach bleeding or ulcer complications.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) – a possible sign of liver problems.

Most people tolerate Losec well, and side effects (if they do occur) are generally mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.
