Overview

Itchy, watery, or red eyes from hayfever can make even simple tasks uncomfortable. Optilast eye drops deliver fast-acting relief by targeting the cause of allergic eye symptoms directly. Containing azelastine, a powerful antihistamine, they quickly soothe irritation and restore comfort — helping you focus, feel clearer, and get on with your day without hayfever in your eyes.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Optilast

Optilast eye drops contain azelastine hydrochloride (0.05%), an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine receptors in the eyes. By targeting histamine directly, it helps reduce inflammation, itching, redness, and watering often triggered by hay fever and other airborne allergens.

They are most commonly prescribed for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever-related eye allergies) and can also ease eye irritation caused by pollen, dust, or environmental allergens.

Relief begins within minutes of use, with the drops working right at the source of discomfort. Optilast is non-drowsy and simple to use, and it can be taken alongside oral antihistamines or nasal sprays for comprehensive allergy management.

Directions

  • Adults and children aged 12+: One drop in each eye twice daily (morning and evening)
  • If symptoms are severe, dosing may be increased to one drop in each eye up to four times daily (maximum)
  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or skin
  • Use regularly during allergy season for best results

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Optilast eye drops can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, short-lived, and improve as your eyes adjust to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild eye irritation or burning after application – this usually settles within a few minutes of using the drops.
  • Bitter taste in the mouth – this can occasionally occur if some of the solution drains into the throat, but it is temporary.

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Dry or itchy eyes – some people may notice mild irritation, which often improves with continued use.
  • Headache – usually mild and short-lasting.

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash. This is very rare but requires immediate emergency help.

Most people tolerate Optilast eye drops well, and side effects (if they do occur) are generally mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or if they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

Optilast may not be suitable if you:

  • Are allergic to azelastine or any ingredient in the drops
