Overview

If bacterial vaginosis keeps coming back or isn’t shifting with other treatments, Zidoval Gel offers a targeted prescription solution. Containing metronidazole, a trusted antibiotic, this gel works directly where it’s needed — in the vagina — to clear the bacteria that cause BV.

Applied once daily for five days, Zidoval provides effective relief from unpleasant discharge and odour while restoring comfort and balance. For many women, it’s the step that finally breaks the cycle of recurrent BV.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Zidoval Gel

Zidoval Gel is a prescription treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV) that contains metronidazole 0.75%, an antibiotic that works directly in the vagina to target the harmful bacteria responsible for infection. By killing these bacteria, Zidoval helps to relieve key BV symptoms such as unusual discharge and unpleasant odour. Because it acts locally, it minimises the risk of systemic side effects that can occur with oral antibiotics. Zidoval is particularly useful for women with recurrent or moderate-to-severe BV, or for those who prefer a topical alternative to tablets.

Directions

  • Apply one applicatorful (5g) of gel into the vagina once daily at bedtime for 5 consecutive days.
  • Always wash hands before and after application.
  • Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve earlier.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after finishing, as metronidazole can cause unpleasant reactions with alcohol.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Zidoval Gel can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Vaginal irritation, itching, or discharge
  • Mild abdominal pain or cramps
  • Metallic taste in the mouth

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Headache
  • Nausea

Most people tolerate Zidoval Gel well, and side effects (if they do occur) are usually mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

Do not use Zidoval Gel if you:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole antibiotics
  • Are in the first trimester of pregnancy (unless your doctor advises)
  • Are breastfeeding (seek medical advice before use)

Zidoval treats BV but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If symptoms are unusual, recurrent, or severe, further medical assessment may be needed.

FAQ's

How quickly does Zidoval Gel work?
Many women notice improvement within 2–3 days, but complete the 5-day course for best results.

Can I drink alcohol while using Zidoval Gel?
No — avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after finishing, as it can cause unpleasant side effects (flushing, nausea, headache).

Does Zidoval Gel prevent BV from coming back?
It treats the infection but cannot guarantee prevention. Lifestyle measures and pH-balancing products may help reduce recurrence.

Is Zidoval Gel better than metronidazole tablets?
Both are effective. Zidoval Gel works locally in the vagina, which may reduce systemic side effects compared to tablets.

Can Zidoval Gel be used during pregnancy?
It is generally avoided in the first trimester unless specifically advised by a doctor.
