Overview
Blocked, itchy, or runny nose making hayfever unbearable? Beconase nasal spray gets to work right where symptoms start, calming inflammation in your nasal passages to relieve sneezing, congestion, and irritation. As a trusted steroid nasal spray, Beconase provides long-lasting relief throughout allergy season, helping you breathe easier and feel more like yourself again.
This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.
What is Beconase
Beconase contains beclometasone dipropionate, a corticosteroid nasal spray that works by reducing inflammation inside the nasal passages. Unlike antihistamines, which block histamine after it is released, Beconase acts at the root of the allergy process, helping to prevent symptoms from developing in the first place.
It is commonly used to relieve nasal symptoms linked to seasonal hay fever (allergic rhinitis) as well as year-round allergies triggered by dust mites, mould, or pets.
By targeting the nose directly, Beconase provides fast and effective relief from sneezing, congestion, itching, and a runny nose. When used daily during allergy season, it offers all-day protection and is suitable for ongoing use to keep symptoms under control.
Directions
- Adults aged 18 and over: Two sprays into each nostril twice daily (maximum 8 sprays per day)
- Once symptoms are controlled, dosage may be reduced to one spray per nostril twice daily
- Shake the bottle before each use
- Use regularly during allergy season for best results
- It may take 2–3 days of consistent use to feel the full effect
Always follow the instructions provided by your prescriber or pharmacist.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Beconase (beclometasone nasal spray) can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, short-lived, and improve as your body adjusts to treatment.
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
- Irritation or dryness in the nose or throat – a stinging, burning, or dry sensation may occur but usually settles with continued use.
- Sneezing after application – this is generally mild and temporary.
- Nosebleeds – usually light and short-lived, but seek advice if persistent.
Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
- Headache – typically mild and temporary.
- Altered sense of taste or smell – some people may notice changes, which often improve over time.
Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):
- Eye pain or blurred vision – may be a sign of raised pressure in the eye and should be checked promptly.
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash. This is extremely rare but requires immediate medical attention.
Most people tolerate Beconase well, and side effects are generally mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or if they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.
Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.
Warnings
Beconase may not be suitable if you:
