Overview

What is Imigran?

Imigran is a branded medication containing sumatriptan succinate, part of the triptan family used to treat migraines. It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and stabilising chemical changes that cause migraine symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. SwiftMedi offers both branded Imigran and its generic equivalent, Sumatriptan tablets. The generic option contains the same active ingredient and provides effective relief at a lower cost. SwiftMedi services are available only for adults aged 18 years and over.

How Does Imigran Work?

  • Stimulates serotonin receptors causing blood vessel constriction
  • Migraines often involve dilation of blood vessels in the brain. Imigran:
  • Stabilises brain chemical activity during migraine attacks

This mechanism helps reduce headache pain and other migraine symptoms. Imigran typically begins to work within 30 minutes of taking the tablet.

How to Take Imigran

Imigran tablets are prescription-only for adults aged 18 and over. Dosage options:

  • 50mg tablets — the usual starting dose for most migraine sufferers
  • 100mg tablets — for more severe attacks or if 50mg is insufficient

Take one tablet at the first sign of migraine symptoms. If symptoms recur, a second dose may be taken after at least two hours, but do not exceed 300mg in 24 hours. Imigran can be taken with painkillers and anti-sickness medicines but should not be combined with other triptans or ergotamine-containing drugs.
