Overview

Sore, red, and itchy eyes from hayfever or allergies can make everyday life uncomfortable and distracting. Opticrom eye drops provide targeted relief straight to your eyes, helping calm irritation, reduce redness, and ease watering. Trusted by allergy sufferers for decades, Opticrom is a well-established treatment that helps you regain clear, comfortable vision when allergies strike.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Opticrom

Opticrom contains sodium cromoglicate, a type of medicine called a mast cell stabiliser. Unlike antihistamines, which treat allergy symptoms after they appear, mast cell stabilisers work by preventing the release of histamine in the first place. This makes Opticrom especially useful for the long-term control of allergic eye symptoms.

It is commonly used to treat seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever-related eye allergies) as well as year-round allergic conjunctivitis caused by triggers such as dust or pets.

Opticrom works best when used regularly during allergy season, helping to reduce itching, redness, and watering in the eyes. Because it is non-drowsy and safe for daily use, it’s suitable for both short-term seasonal flare-ups and longer-term allergy management.

Directions

  • Adults and children aged 6+: One or two drops into each eye, four times daily
  • Continue regular use throughout allergy season for best results
  • Wash hands before applying
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface
  • Remove contact lenses before use; wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting

Always follow the guidance of your prescriber or pharmacist.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Opticrom eye drops can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, temporary, and improve as your eyes adjust to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild burning or stinging after application – this usually settles within a few minutes of using the drops.
  • Temporary blurred vision – vision may be affected briefly after applying the drops; avoid driving or operating machinery until your sight clears.

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Eye dryness or irritation – some people may notice discomfort or a gritty sensation in the eyes.
  • Watery eyes – occasionally, the drops may make the eyes feel more watery before symptoms improve.

Rare but serious (stop use and seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash. This is very rare but requires immediate medical help.

Most people tolerate Opticrom well, and side effects (if they do occur) are usually mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

Opticrom may not be suitable if you:

  • Are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any of the ingredients
  • Wear contact lenses constantly (always remove before applying)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (seek advice before use)
