Overview

Sofradex Ear Drops provide fast relief from painful ear infections by combining antibiotic and anti-inflammatory action in one simple treatment.
They not only clear infection but also reduce itching, swelling, and discomfort - helping you feel better quickly.

What is Sofradex

Otitis externa (outer ear infection) can cause intense pain, itching, discharge, and temporary hearing loss. Sofradex targets all these symptoms at once, making it one of the most widely prescribed ear treatments in the UK.

Each drop contains:

  • Framycetin: a potent antibiotic that kills the bacteria responsible for ear infections.
  • Gramicidin: another antibiotic that boosts antibacterial coverage.
  • Dexamethasone: a corticosteroid that calms inflammation and reduces swelling.

By delivering two antibiotics plus an anti-inflammatory, Sofradex provides comprehensive relief from both infection and inflammation. Most patients start noticing improvement within a few days, with full recovery expected in 7–10 days.

Directions

  • Usually 2–3 drops into the affected ear 3–4 times daily, or as directed by your prescriber.
  • Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve earlier.
  • Avoid use for more than 7 days unless instructed by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate Sofradex well, but mild side effects may occur.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Temporary stinging or burning in the ear
  • Mild irritation or itching

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Skin rash around the ear
  • Thinning of the skin with prolonged use (due to the steroid)

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical help):

  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing)
  • Worsening pain, swelling, or hearing loss

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, stop using the drops and seek medical advice promptly. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Not suitable if allergic to framycetin, gramicidin, or dexamethasone.
  • Avoid if you have a perforated eardrum, unless prescribed by a specialist.
  • Use with caution if you have long-term ear problems or skin sensitivity.
