Overview

What is Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan is a medication from the triptan class, prescribed to relieve migraines by constricting blood vessels and stabilising brain chemicals involved in migraine attacks. At SwiftMedi, we offer both generic Sumatriptan tablets and the branded version, Imigran tablets. The generic alternative contains the same active ingredient and provides an effective, affordable treatment option. SwiftMedi services are available only for adults aged 18 years and over.

How Does Sumatriptan Work?

  • Stabilising brain chemical activity during migraine attacks
  • Migraines are linked to the widening of blood vessels in the brain. Sumatriptan treats migraines by:
  • Stimulating serotonin receptors to cause blood vessel contraction
  • This reduces headache pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Sumatriptan usually begins to work within 30 minutes.

How to Take Sumatriptan

Sumatriptan tablets are prescription-only and intended for adults aged 18 and over. Dosage options include:

  • 50mg tablets — the typical starting dose for most migraines
  • 100mg tablets — for more severe symptoms or if 50mg is insufficient

Take one tablet as soon as migraine symptoms start. A second dose may be taken after at least two hours if symptoms return, with a maximum of 300mg (three 100mg tablets or six 50mg tablets) in 24 hours. Sumatriptan can be safely combined with painkillers and anti-sickness medicines but should never be used with other triptans or ergotamine-containing medications.

Dosage Options

  • Sumatriptan 50mg tablets
  • Sumatriptan 100mg tablets
