Overview

Constant sneezing, a blocked nose, or itchy nasal passages can turn hayfever into a daily struggle. Flixonase nasal spray targets allergy symptoms at their source, calming inflammation inside the nose to provide powerful, all-day relief. With regular use, it helps you breathe freely, stay comfortable, and enjoy life without allergies holding you back.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Flixonase

Flixonase contains fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid nasal spray that reduces inflammation inside the nasal passages. While antihistamines work by blocking histamine after it is released, Flixonase tackles the root of the allergic response, helping to both prevent and relieve troublesome symptoms.

It is widely used for seasonal hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and year-round allergies triggered by dust mites, pets, or mould. By targeting inflammation directly, Flixonase provides powerful, long-lasting relief from nasal congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose, while also helping to ease itchy, watery eyes linked to hay fever.

For the best results, Flixonase should be used daily and consistently throughout allergy season or as prescribed. With a strong track record as a clinically proven corticosteroid treatment, it is a trusted choice for effective allergy control.

Directions

  • Adults (18+): Two sprays into each nostril once daily (maximum 4 sprays per nostril daily)
  • Once symptoms are controlled, dose may be reduced to one spray per nostril daily
  • Shake bottle before use
  • Use regularly — may take 2–3 days for full effect
  • Continue throughout allergy season or as directed by your prescriber

Always follow the directions given by your prescriber or pharmacist.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Flixonase (fluticasone propionate nasal spray) can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, short-lived, and improve as your body adjusts to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Nosebleeds – usually mild and temporary, more likely with long-term use.
  • Dryness or irritation in the nose or throat – a stinging, burning, or uncomfortable feeling may occur after spraying but often settles with continued use.
  • Headache – typically mild and short-lasting, eased with rest or simple pain relief if needed.

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Altered sense of smell or taste – some people notice changes, which usually improve with time.
  • Sore throat – irritation or discomfort in the throat may develop but is generally mild.

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash. This is extremely rare but requires immediate medical attention.
  • Eye pain or blurred vision – may be a sign of raised pressure in the eye; seek medical assessment promptly if this occurs.

Most people tolerate Flixonase well, and side effects (if they do occur) are generally mild and temporary. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Flixonase and how does it work?

Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) is a corticosteroid nasal spray used to treat hay fever and allergy-related nasal symptoms. It works by reducing inflammation inside the nasal passages, easing congestion, sneezing and irritation. It is suitable for both seasonal and year-round allergies when used consistently.

  • How long does Flixonase take to work?

Most people begin to notice improvement within twelve hours of using Flixonase (fluticasone propionate), but the full benefit can take several days of regular use. Because it works gradually, daily dosing is important even when symptoms vary. Skipping doses can reduce overall effectiveness.

  • What symptoms does Flixonase help relieve?

Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) helps relieve blocked nose, sneezing, runny nose, sinus pressure and post-nasal drip caused by allergies. It is particularly effective for persistent congestion that hasn’t responded well to antihistamines alone.

  • How do I use Flixonase correctly?

Shake the bottle, tilt your head slightly forward and insert the nozzle into one nostril. Aim outward toward the ear rather than the septum to reduce irritation or nosebleeds. Spray as directed while gently breathing in. Repeat for the other nostril if required.

  • Who should avoid using Flixonase?

Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) may not be suitable if you have active nasal infections, recent nasal surgery, untreated sinus disease or allergies to corticosteroids. Some medicines, including ritonavir, may increase steroid levels, so a clinician should assess suitability before use.

  • What are the side effects of Flixonase?

Common side effects include mild nosebleeds, dryness, throat irritation and occasional headache. These usually improve with correct technique or adjusting the dose. If symptoms persist or become uncomfortable, a clinician may suggest switching to another nasal spray.

  • Can I use antihistamines with Flixonase?

Yes. Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) is often combined with antihistamines such as fexofenadine or cetirizine when allergy symptoms include itchy eyes or are particularly severe. This combination can offer stronger relief during high-pollen periods.

  • Can Flixonase help reduce snoring caused by nasal congestion?

In some cases, yes. Snoring linked to blocked nasal passages may improve when Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) reduces swelling inside the nose. It will not help snoring caused by mouth breathing, alcohol or sleep apnoea, but it can ease allergy-related congestion that contributes to nighttime noise.

  • Is Flixonase suitable for year-round dust or pet allergies?

Yes. Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) is effective for perennial allergies triggered by dust mites, pets or mould. Many people use it throughout the year to control ongoing nasal inflammation.Regular reviews help ensure it remains the best option long term.

  • Can Flixonase improve smell that is reduced by allergies?

Yes. Loss of smell caused by swollen nasal passages can improve once Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) reduces inflammation. Recovery may take several days or weeks depending on symptom severity. If smell does not return or worsens, further assessment may be needed.

  • Can I use Flixonase alongside saline rinses or a humidifier?

Yes. Using saline rinses before Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) can help clear mucus and improve how well the spray is absorbed. A humidifier may also reduce dryness and irritation, especially in winter months. Leave several minutes between saline and Flixonase use.

  • Is Flixonase safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) may be considered when allergy symptoms significantly affect daily life, but a clinician should always assess its suitability first. They may recommend continuing, adjusting or switching treatment based on your health and allergy severity.

  • What should I do if Flixonase dries out my nose or causes cracking?

If Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) causes dryness, consider using saline sprays or gels to moisturise the nasal lining. Ensuring the nozzle is aimed outward also reduces irritation. If dryness becomes persistent or painful, a clinician may suggest adjusting your dose or switching to a different nasal spray.

  • Does Flixonase help with nighttime congestion that disrupts sleep?

Many people find Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) particularly helpful for nighttime congestion caused by allergies. Reducing nasal swelling can improve airflow and sleep quality. Evening use may offer additional benefit, although timing can be flexible.

  • Why might Flixonase stop working as well after a while?

Reduced response to Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) is often due to inconsistent dosing, incorrect technique or increased allergen exposure. Reviewing technique, adding antihistamines or switching nasal steroids may help. Persistent symptoms should be assessed by a clinician.
