Overview

Itchy, watery, or red eyes from hayfever can make even simple tasks uncomfortable. Optilast eye drops deliver fast-acting relief by targeting the cause of allergic eye symptoms directly. Containing azelastine, a powerful antihistamine, they quickly soothe irritation and restore comfort — helping you focus, feel clearer, and get on with your day without hayfever in your eyes.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Optilast

Optilast eye drops contain azelastine hydrochloride (0.05%), an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine receptors in the eyes. By targeting histamine directly, it helps reduce inflammation, itching, redness, and watering often triggered by hay fever and other airborne allergens.

They are most commonly prescribed for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever-related eye allergies) and can also ease eye irritation caused by pollen, dust, or environmental allergens.

Relief begins within minutes of use, with the drops working right at the source of discomfort. Optilast is non-drowsy and simple to use, and it can be taken alongside oral antihistamines or nasal sprays for comprehensive allergy management.

Directions

  • Adults and children aged 12+: One drop in each eye twice daily (morning and evening)
  • If symptoms are severe, dosing may be increased to one drop in each eye up to four times daily (maximum)
  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or skin
  • Use regularly during allergy season for best results

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Optilast eye drops can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild, short-lived, and improve as your eyes adjust to treatment.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild eye irritation or burning after application – this usually settles within a few minutes of using the drops.
  • Bitter taste in the mouth – this can occasionally occur if some of the solution drains into the throat, but it is temporary.

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Dry or itchy eyes – some people may notice mild irritation, which often improves with continued use.
  • Headache – usually mild and short-lasting.

Rare but serious (seek urgent medical advice):

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a sudden rash. This is very rare but requires immediate emergency help.

Most people tolerate Optilast eye drops well, and side effects (if they do occur) are generally mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or if they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Frequently asked questions
  • What are Optilast eye drops and how do they work?

Optilast eye drops contain azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine that blocks histamine in the eyes to reduce itching, redness and watering caused by allergies. They are used for seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis and provide relief when symptoms flare quickly.

  • How fast do Optilast eye drops start working?

Optilast eye drops often begin working within minutes, making them useful for rapid relief during high-pollen days. Full symptom control may improve with regular twice-daily use. If symptoms remain severe despite consistent dosing, a clinician may suggest combining treatments.

  • What symptoms do Optilast eye drops treat?

Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride) helps calm itchy, red, sore or watery eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis. They are particularly helpful when eye symptoms persist even after using oral antihistamines or nasal sprays.

  • How do I use Optilast eye drops correctly?

Wash your hands, tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid. Apply one drop without touching the eye. Blink slowly and repeat for the other eye if needed. Consistent twice-daily dosing provides the best relief.

  • Who should not use Optilast eye drops?

Optilast may not be suitable if you are allergic to azelastine, wear certain contact lenses, have eye infections or take medicines that cause drowsiness. A clinician should assess suitability during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • What side effects can Optilast eye drops cause?

Common side effects include mild stinging, temporary blurred vision, a bitter taste and light eye irritation. These usually settle quickly. If symptoms persist or worsen, a clinician may recommend switching to a different antihistamine or mast-cell stabiliser.

  • Can I use Optilast with other allergy treatments?

Yes. Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride) can be used alongside oral antihistamines or nasal sprays when symptoms are strong or involve both eyes and nose. Combination treatment is often recommended during peak allergy seasons.

  • Why do Optilast eye drops sometimes leave a bitter taste?

A bitter taste can occur if a small amount of Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride) drains into the throat through the tear ducts. Tilting your head forward and closing your eyes briefly after instilling drops helps reduce this. Taking a sip of water afterwards also removes the aftertaste for many people.

  • Are Optilast eye drops suitable for contact lens wearers?

Optilast can be used with contact lenses, but you should remove lenses before applying the drops. Wait at least fifteen minutes before reinserting them to prevent irritation or absorption of preservatives into the lens material.

  • Can Optilast help with pet or dust allergies affecting the eyes?

Yes. Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride) helps manage eye symptoms triggered by indoor allergens such as pet dander, dust mites and mould. Consistent daily use often offers steady relief for people with year-round allergic conjunctivitis.

  • Can I drive after using Optilast eye drops?

Temporary blurred vision can occur immediately after applying Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride). Wait until your vision clears fully before driving or operating machinery. If blurring persists or feels unusual, seek clinical advice.

  • How long can I use Optilast continuously?

Optilast (azelastine hydrochloride) is suitable for regular use during allergy seasons or year-round symptoms. Many people use it for several weeks or months. If symptoms persist beyond the expected allergy period, a review may be needed to rule out other causes.

  • Can Optilast help if my eyes are swollen from allergies?

Yes. Optilast reduces inflammation and histamine release, which can help calm puffiness and swelling around the eyes. Cold compresses may offer additional relief during sudden flare-ups. If swelling becomes severe or one-sided, seek medical advice.

  • Can children use Optilast eye drops?

Optilast may be suitable for older children depending on age and formulation, but a clinician or pharmacist should confirm this. They will assess the child’s symptoms, medical history and whether the drops are the best treatment option.

  • What should I do if Optilast stops working as well?

Reduced benefit may be due to higher allergen levels, inconsistent use or severe flare-ups. Reviewing technique, adding an oral antihistamine or switching eye-drop type can restore control. Persistent symptoms should be reviewed clinically.
