What is Imigran

Imigran (sumatriptan) is part of the triptan family of medicines (5-HT1 receptor agonists) and is used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura.

Unlike ordinary painkillers, Imigran works directly on the migraine process by:

  • Narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain
  • Calming overactive nerve pathways
  • Reducing pain, nausea, and light/sound sensitivity

As the branded original version of Sumatriptan, Imigran has a long history of safe and effective use in the UK and worldwide.

Directions

  • Take one 50mg or 100mg Imigran tablet at the first sign of a migraine.
  • If symptoms return, a second dose may be taken after 2 hours.
  • Do not exceed 300mg in 24 hours.
  • Swallow whole with water.

Not suitable for children under 18. Always follow your prescriber’s instructions.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Imigran and how does it treat migraines?

Imigran is the branded version of sumatriptan, a triptan medicine that treats migraine attacks by narrowing widened blood vessels and calming pain pathways in the brain. It can reduce pain, nausea and sensitivity to light or sound when taken early in an attack. Imigran is available as tablets, nasal spray and injections depending on your symptoms.

  • Is Imigran different from generic sumatriptan?

Imigran contains the same active ingredient as generic sumatriptan, so effectiveness should be similar. Some people prefer the branded version due to consistent packaging, predictable tolerability or familiarity from previous prescriptions. Others find generics work just as well. The choice often depends on personal response and which form  you prefer.

  • How quickly does Imigran work?

Imigran tablets usually start working within 30-60 minutes, while the nasal spray can begin easing symptoms sooner. Imigran injections work fastest, often within 10-15 minutes. Taking Imigran at the first sign of migraine pain helps prevent the attack becoming severe and increases the chance of full relief.

  • How do I take Imigran safely?

Take one dose at the start of your migraine and follow the recommended interval before taking a second dose if symptoms return. Do not exceed the daily maximum. Using Imigran too often may cause medication-overuse headaches, so keeping a diary is helpful. Always check medicine interactions if you take other treatments.

  • What side effects can Imigran cause?

Some people experience warm sensations, tingling, tightness, dizziness or tiredness after taking Imigran. These feelings usually settle quickly. Rare side effects such as chest discomfort or shortness of breath need urgent medical help. If you consistently find Imigran uncomfortable, another triptan may suit you better.

  • Who should not use Imigran?

Imigran is unsuitable for people with heart disease, previous stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, vascular problems or certain rhythm conditions. It also interacts with some antidepressants. A clinician will check your health and medicines before prescribing Imigran to ensure it’s safe.

  • Is Imigran suitable for sudden or severe migraines?

Yes. Imigran can be very effective for sudden, intense or disabling migraines, especially when taken early. People with fast-escalating symptoms often benefit from nasal spray or injection forms because they act quickly even when nausea slows digestion. Your clinician can guide which form suits your pattern best.

  • Does Imigran work better than generic sumatriptan for some people?

Some people report smoother, more consistent results with Imigran due to familiarity or confidence in the branded version, although studies show both work the same medically. Personal response varies, and some feel branding affects how quickly they use the treatment. If results differ noticeably, mention this during review.

  • Is Imigran nasal spray useful if I have strong nausea during migraines?

Yes. Imigran nasal spray is helpful if nausea or vomiting prevents you swallowing tablets or delays absorption. It works faster than tablets and is easier to use during severe attacks. Many people with sickness-dominant migraines prefer this form.

  • Does Imigran injection work faster than tablets?

Yes. Imigran injection is the fastest form, typically easing symptoms within 10–15 minutes. It’s often recommended for extreme or rapidly building migraines, cluster headaches or when you can’t keep oral medicines down. Its speed makes it highly effective for emergency use.

  • Can Imigran help if migraines keep returning later in the day?

Imigran can help, and a second dose may be taken after the advised interval. If migraines repeatedly return shortly after treatment, you may benefit from trying a different triptan or starting preventive therapy. Recurrence can also be linked to triggers still being active.

  • Can I take Imigran with ibuprofen, paracetamol or anti-sickness tablets?

Yes. Many people combine Imigran with ibuprofen, paracetamol or an anti-sickness medicine like metoclopramide for additional relief. Avoid codeine, as it increases the risk of medication-overuse headaches. Always check medicine interactions before combining treatments.

  • Is Imigran suitable for menstrual or hormonal migraines?

Yes. Imigran can be effective for hormone-related migraines, which often build quickly and cause severe symptoms. Taking it early improves results. Some people benefit from a pre-planned treatment strategy around their cycle. A clinician can guide you if attacks are predictable.

  • Can Imigran help migraines that start during sleep or early morning?

Yes. Many people wake with migraines triggered by sleep disruption, hormones or muscle tension. Imigran can still work effectively when taken as soon as symptoms begin on waking. Faster forms like nasal spray may work best for early morning attacks.

  • Why might Imigran stop working as well over time?

Migraine patterns can change due to hormones, stress, sleep issues or medication overuse. If Imigran becomes less reliable, another triptan or a longer-acting option may help. Reviewing triggers or starting a preventive medicine may also improve future control.
