Overview

Painful white patches, soreness, or a burning sensation in the mouth can make eating, drinking, and even speaking uncomfortable. Daktarin Oral Gel is a trusted antifungal treatment that targets the cause of oral thrush, helping to clear infection and restore comfort.

Containing miconazole 2%, this gel works directly in the mouth to kill the yeast responsible for thrush while soothing irritated tissue. Its gel formulation allows it to coat the affected areas, providing effective, localised treatment exactly where it’s needed.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Daktarin Oral Gel

Daktarin Oral Gel contains miconazole 2%, an antifungal medicine that works by damaging the cell membranes of fungi, causing them to die and stopping the infection from spreading.

It is used to treat:

  • Oral thrush (oral candidiasis) – a common fungal infection of the mouth and tongue
  • Angular cheilitis – fungal infection causing cracking at the corners of the mouth
  • Thrush associated with dentures or steroid inhaler use

Unlike tablets, Daktarin Oral Gel works locally in the mouth, making it especially effective for visible white patches, redness, soreness, and discomfort. With consistent use, symptoms often begin to improve within a few days, although the full course must be completed to prevent recurrence.

Directions

Always follow your prescriber’s instructions carefully.

  • Apply the gel inside the mouth using a clean finger or spoon.
  • Spread gently over affected areas and keep in the mouth as long as possible before swallowing.
  • Use four times daily, preferably after meals.
  • Continue treatment for at least 7 days after symptoms have cleared to ensure the infection is fully treated.

Important notes:

  • Do not apply to the back of the throat (especially in infants).
  • Remove dentures before application and clean them thoroughly before reinserting.
  • Wash hands before and after use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the more common questions we hear from customers about shopping with Swiftmedi.
  • What is Daktarin Oral Gel and how does it work?

Daktarin Oral Gel contains miconazole, an antifungal medicine used to treat oral thrush. It works by stopping the growth of Candida yeast in the mouth, helping reduce white patches, soreness and discomfort. The gel sticks to the inside of the mouth to keep the medicine in contact with the affected areas.

  • How should I use Daktarin Oral Gel for oral thrush?

Apply Daktarin gel after meals, dividing the dose around the mouth and holding it in place for as long as comfortably possible before swallowing. This gives better contact with affected patches. Use it four times daily and continue for at least two days after symptoms clear to prevent recurrence.

  • How long does Daktarin Oral Gel take to work?

Most people start feeling improvement within a few days, though complete recovery may take up to a week or more. Persistent cases may require a longer course. If symptoms are not improving after a week, a clinician may consider alternative treatments.

  • Is Daktarin Oral Gel safe for babies and children?

Daktarin Oral Gel can be used in children over four months old, but must not be used in younger infants due to choking risk. Apply small amounts and place them at the front of the mouth only. Always follow the dosing instructions carefully.

  • What are the common side effects of Daktarin Oral Gel?

Most people tolerate Daktarin well. Possible effects include mild stomach discomfort, nausea or altered taste. Rarely, irritation inside the mouth or allergic reactions can occur. Seek help if you notice swelling, rash or breathing difficulty.

  • Can Daktarin Oral Gel be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Daktarin Oral Gel may be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding if recommended by a clinician. They will decide whether it is the safest option or if an alternative treatment would be better. Avoid applying to the breast area if breastfeeding.

  • Can I use Daktarin Oral Gel with dentures?

Yes, but dentures should be cleaned thoroughly and treated at the same time to prevent reinfection. Apply Daktarin gel to sore areas under the denture and remove the denture overnight. Keeping dentures clean helps stop thrush returning.

  • Can I eat or drink straight after applying Daktarin Oral Gel?

It’s best to wait as long as possible before eating or drinking so the gel stays in contact with the affected areas. Rinsing or drinking immediately can wash the medicine away and make it less effective. Try applying it after meals for convenience.

  • What should I do if Daktarin Oral Gel makes my mouth sore?

Mild tingling or irritation can occur when treatment begins. If it becomes uncomfortable, reduce the amount applied to each area or use smaller, more frequent applications. Stop using it and seek advice if soreness becomes severe or persistent.

  • Do I need to avoid certain foods while using Daktarin Oral Gel?

No specific foods need to be avoided, but sugary snacks and drinks can make thrush harder to clear. Gentle, non-acidic foods may feel more comfortable if your mouth is sore. Good oral hygiene helps prevent recurrence.

  • What happens if I accidentally swallow the whole dose at once?

Daktarin Oral Gel is normally swallowed gradually, so swallowing a dose at once is not usually harmful. However, it may reduce contact time with the affected areas. Continue as normal with the next scheduled dose. If large amounts are swallowed accidentally, seek advice.

  • Can Daktarin Oral Gel treat angular cheilitis (cracked corners of the mouth)?

Yes, it can help if fungal overgrowth is contributing to soreness at the corners of the mouth. Apply a thin layer to the affected area as directed. If symptoms do not improve, other causes such as irritation or eczema may need addressing.

  • Can Daktarin Oral Gel interact with other medicines?

Yes. Miconazole can interact with several medicines, including blood thinners and some diabetes treatments. Always tell your prescriber about any medicines you take so they can check for possible interactions.

  • What if Daktarin Oral Gel doesn’t clear my thrush?

If symptoms persist after a full course, reinfection, incorrect dosing or an underlying condition may be contributing. A clinician may recommend an alternative such as fluconazole or nystatin. Checking dentures, inhaler technique and hygiene also helps prevent recurrence.

  • Can Daktarin Oral Gel be used after antibiotics or steroid inhalers?

Yes. Oral thrush commonly follows antibiotic courses or inhaler use. Daktarin Oral Gel can help restore balance, but proper inhaler technique and rinsing the mouth afterwards are important to prevent it returning. A clinician can advise if recurrent thrush needs further investigation.
