Overview

Aches, strains, or stiff joints slowing you down? Voltarol 2.32% Gel delivers fast, targeted pain relief exactly where you need it most.
Formulated with diclofenac diethylammonium, this extra-strength anti-inflammatory gel penetrates deep into the skin to relieve pain, reduce swelling, and help you move more freely - without the need for tablets.

Whether it’s back pain, muscle strain, sprains, or joint stiffness, Voltarol 2.32% gets to work right at the source of inflammation.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Voltarol 2.32% Gel

Voltarol 2.32% Gel contains diclofenac diethylammonium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking prostaglandins - substances in the body responsible for pain, inflammation, and swelling.

This formulation is twice the strength of standard Voltarol 1.16% gel, providing long-lasting relief from pain and inflammation with just two daily applications.

It is commonly used to treat:

  • Muscle pain and stiffness (e.g. from exercise or injury)
  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Mild arthritis and joint pain (knees, hands, elbows)
  • Strains, sprains, and bruises

By reducing inflammation directly at the site of pain, Voltarol helps improve movement and flexibility - so you can get back to your daily activities sooner.

Directions

  1. Apply a thin layer of gel (about 2-4g) to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening).
  2. Gently massage into the skin until fully absorbed - avoid applying to broken or infected skin.
  3. Wash hands immediately after use (unless treating the hands themselves).
  4. Do not cover with occlusive dressings or bandages unless advised by your prescriber.
  5. Continue for up to 14 days for soft-tissue injuries or 21 days for arthritis, unless otherwise directed.

Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or open wounds.

If symptoms persist after two weeks, seek medical advice.

Side Effects

  • Mild skin irritation or redness
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Dryness or rash at the site of application

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

Rare but serious (seek medical advice immediately):

  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Photosensitivity (rash triggered by sunlight)

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, stop using the gel and speak to your doctor or pharmacist. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

Do not use Voltarol Gel if you:

  • Are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
  • Have a history of asthma, wheezing, or skin rash after NSAID use
  • Are pregnant (especially in the third trimester) or breastfeeding, unless advised
  • Have broken, inflamed, or infected skin at the application site

Use with caution if you:

  • Have asthma or other respiratory conditions
  • Have sensitive skin or eczema
  • Are using other diclofenac-containing products or oral NSAIDs

Avoid exposure of the treated area to direct sunlight or tanning beds to reduce the risk of photosensitivity.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Voltarol 2.32% Gel and how does it work?

Voltarol 2.32% Gel contains a higher-strength form of diclofenac, designed to penetrate deeper into affected joints and tissues. It reduces inflammation and pain by blocking prostaglandins, offering longer-lasting relief with fewer daily applications.

  • How is Voltarol 2.32% different from the 1.16% gel?

The Voltarol 2.32% gel is double the strength, allowing effective pain relief with only two applications per day instead of multiple. It is designed for targeted joint pain such as knees, elbows or hands. Some people prefer it for convenience or longer-lasting relief.

  • What is Voltarol 2.32% Gel used for?

It is used to relieve joint pain, stiffness and inflammation caused by mild arthritis and localised musculoskeletal injuries. The higher strength can be helpful for people who need more sustained relief throughout the day.

  • How should I apply Voltarol 2.32% Gel?

Apply a thin layer of Voltarol gel to the affected joint twice daily, usually morning and evening. Massage gently until absorbed. Do not apply to broken skin, large body areas or immediately before bathing or showering. Wash hands after use unless treating your hands directly.

  • How long does Voltarol 2.32% Gel take to work?

Some relief may appear within one hour, but the greatest benefit usually builds over several days of regular use. Because it is a stronger gel, many people notice improvement sooner compared with the standard formulation.

  • What are the common side effects of Voltarol 2.32% Gel?

Side effects may include skin redness, itching, dryness or mild burning where applied. Because the gel is stronger, irritation can occasionally be more noticeable. Stop using it if a rash or blistering develops, and seek help if symptoms persist.

  • Who should not use Voltarol 2.32% Gel?

Do not use this gel if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAIDs, or if you have broken or infected skin. It is not suitable in late pregnancy, and people with asthma triggered by NSAIDs should check with a clinician first.

  • Is Voltarol 2.32% Gel suitable for chronic joint pain?

Yes. Many people use it for ongoing joint pain, especially in hands, knees or elbows, where local inflammation contributes to discomfort. It can be repeated daily, but long-term problems may still require assessment or additional treatment options.

  • Can I use Voltarol Gel alongside heat or ice therapy?

Yes, but avoid using the gel immediately before applying heat packs, as this may increase absorption and irritation. Ice can be used separately to help reduce swelling, but keep treatments spaced apart.

  • Is Voltarol 2.32% safe for older adults?

Many older adults tolerate Voltarol well because very little reaches the bloodstream, reducing risks seen with oral NSAIDs. However, fragile skin may be more sensitive, so start with small amounts and monitor for irritation.

  • Can I use Voltarol Gel under sports tape or bandages?

No. Occlusive dressings increase absorption and the chance of irritation. If protection or compression is needed, allow Voltarol gel to dry fully and seek advice on safer methods.

  • Does Voltarol 2.32% help with inflammation from overuse injuries?

Yes. Tendon or ligament overuse injuries often involve inflammation, and Voltarol gel can help reduce pain during flare-ups. Consistent use over several days usually brings the best results.

  • Can Voltarol 2.32% Gel be used before exercise?

Voltarol gel can be used before gentle activity, but avoid applying it immediately before vigorous exercise as sweating may reduce absorption or cause irritation. Many people find better relief when using it after activity instead.

  • What should I do if I accidentally apply too much Voltarol Gel?

Wipe off any excess with a tissue and wash the area. A single extra application is unlikely to cause harm, but repeated overuse increases the chance of irritation. Seek advice if you develop persistent redness or swelling.

  • Can I buy Voltarol 2.32% Gel online in the UK?

Yes. It can be purchased online from a registered UK pharmacy after answering a few safety questions to confirm suitability. You may be asked about skin conditions, allergies or other medications to ensure it is safe.
