Overview

Bactroban is a trusted antibiotic treatment for bacterial skin infections, including impetigo. Containing mupirocin, it works directly at the site of infection to stop bacteria growing and spreading, helping skin heal quickly and preventing complications.

Available as both cream (lighter, good for moist or exposed areas) and ointment (richer, protective for dry or covered areas), Bactroban offers targeted relief when infection strikes.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Bactroban

Bactroban (mupirocin) is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections, especially impetigo — a highly contagious infection that causes red sores, blisters, and crusts, often around the mouth, nose, or limbs.

It is also effective against:

  • Infected eczema patches
  • Small boils or infected cuts
  • Folliculitis (inflamed/infected hair follicles)
  • Localised staphylococcal or streptococcal infections

By targeting the bacteria directly, Bactroban helps clear infections and reduces the risk of spreading to others.

Directions

  • Apply a small amount to the affected area 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your prescriber.
  • Use only on the affected skin.
  • Do not use on large areas or broken skin unless instructed.
  • Wash hands before and after use.
  • Complete the full prescribed course (usually up to 10 days), even if symptoms improve sooner.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Bactroban can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Mild stinging, burning, or itching at the application site
  • Dryness or redness

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • Rash or allergic reaction
  • Worsening of underlying skin irritation

Most people tolerate Bactroban well, and side effects (if they do occur) are usually mild. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Do not use if allergic to mupirocin or any ingredient.
  • Not suitable for viral or fungal infections (e.g. cold sores, athlete’s foot).
  • Avoid use in the eyes, nose, or mouth unless specifically prescribed (special nasal Bactroban exists for MRSA carriers).
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a prescriber before use.
  • Use only for the prescribed duration to avoid antibiotic resistance.
Frequently asked questions
  • What is Bactroban Cream and what is it used for?

Bactroban Cream contains mupirocin, an antibiotic used to treat small bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, infected eczema patches and minor wounds. It is often prescribed when other topical antibiotics are unsuitable or when infections occur in sensitive areas.

  • How does Bactroban Cream work?

Bactroban blocks the growth of bacteria, allowing the skin to heal. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, including some strains resistant to other topical antibiotics. This makes it a useful option when standard treatments do not work.

  • How do I apply Bactroban Cream correctly?

Apply a thin layer of Bactroban to the affected area three times daily or as directed. Wash hands before and after use and avoid covering with airtight dressings unless advised. Treatment usually lasts up to 10 days.

  • Is Bactroban Cream different from Bactroban Ointment?

Yes. Both contain mupirocin, but the cream is used for infected eczema and moist areas, while the ointment is preferred for dry or crusted infections and for use inside the nostrils if prescribed. Each formulation targets different skin types.

  • What infections respond well to Bactroban Cream?

Bactroban is effective for impetigo, small patches of infected eczema, minor infected wounds and infections caused by organisms sensitive to mupirocin. It is not effective for fungal or viral infections.

  • What side effects can Bactroban Cream cause?

Side effects are usually mild and may include temporary burning, itching, redness or dryness. More serious reactions such as swelling or blistering are rare. If irritation worsens or spreads, stop treatment and seek advice.

  • Can Bactroban be used on the face or around the nose?

Yes, it may be used on the face for conditions like impetigo or infected eczema. For infections inside the nostrils, mupirocin ointment is usually preferred instead of the cream.

  • Does Bactroban Cream treat MRSA-related skin infections?

Mupirocin is effective against many MRSA strains, so Bactroban may be prescribed for minor MRSA-related skin infections. It must be used exactly as directed to prevent resistance. Severe infections require additional treatment.

  • Can Bactroban Cream be used for infected eczema flare-ups?

Yes. When eczema becomes cracked and infected, mupirocin can help clear the bacteria and support healing. Ongoing eczema management with emollients remains important to prevent recurrence.

  • Does Bactroban work for fungal infections such as thrush or ringworm?

No. Bactroban is an antibiotic and has no effect on fungal infections. Conditions caused by yeast or dermatophytes require antifungal creams like clotrimazole or terbinafine.

  • Can I use Bactroban with a steroid cream?

Do not combine topical steroids with Bactroban unless instructed by a clinician. Steroids can worsen some infections or mask symptoms. If inflammation is significant, a combined antibiotic–steroid product may be considered instead.

  • What should I do if Bactroban Cream irritates my skin?

Mild stinging is common on cracked or inflamed skin. If itching, redness or discomfort increases, stop using the cream. You may need an alternative antibiotic or a different formulation.

  • Can Bactroban be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Mupirocin is generally considered safe when used on small areas, but you should confirm suitability with a clinician first. Avoid using it on or near the breast during breastfeeding.

  • Can I use Bactroban on insect bites that have become infected?

Yes. Bactroban may be prescribed for bites that show signs of mild bacterial infection such as crusting, weeping or spreading redness. Continue using antihistamines if itching remains a problem.

  • What should I do if Bactroban does not improve my skin after a week?

If symptoms do not improve within 7–10 days, the infection may be resistant, deeper than expected or caused by fungi or viruses. A clinician may recommend alternative creams or oral antibiotics.
