Overview

When eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis flare-ups become too inflamed for mild steroids, Betnovate provides stronger relief. Containing betamethasone valerate, a potent corticosteroid, it quickly calms redness, itching, and swelling, helping skin settle when other treatments haven’t been enough.

Available as a cream (lighter, absorbs quickly) or ointment (thicker, more hydrating), Betnovate can be matched to your skin’s needs.

This medicine requires a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Betnovate

Betnovate is a potent corticosteroid designed to reduce inflammation in more severe skin conditions. It works by suppressing the body’s overactive immune response that causes redness, swelling, itching, and irritation.

Because it is stronger than Hydrocortisone or Clobetasone, Betnovate is typically used when milder steroids haven’t worked, or when flare-ups are particularly stubborn or widespread.

Conditions treated with Betnovate include:

  • Moderate to severe eczema
  • Dermatitis (allergic or irritant)
  • Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
  • Lichen planus
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus
  • Severe insect bite reactions

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice daily as directed.
  • Do not use on the face, groin, or armpits unless specifically instructed.
  • Use sparingly — only on inflamed areas.
  • Typically prescribed for up to 2–4 weeks; not for long-term continuous use.
  • Wash hands after applying unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Betnovate can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a stronger steroid, the risk of side effects is higher if it is used for long periods or on sensitive areas of skin.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Temporary burning or stinging
  • Dryness or itching

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with longer use):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Dilated blood vessels
  • Increased hair growth on treated skin
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Betnovate well when used as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Warnings

  • Do not use if allergic to betamethasone or other corticosteroids.
  • Not suitable for untreated skin infections, rosacea, acne, or perioral dermatitis.
  • Avoid use on broken skin or large surface areas without medical advice.
  • Not recommended for children under 12 unless prescribed.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek prescriber guidance before use.
  • Always follow the course and duration recommended by your prescriber — misuse increases risks of side effects.

FAQ's

What’s the difference between Betnovate cream and ointment?
Cream is lighter and suitable for moist or weeping skin, while ointment is thicker and better for dry, scaly patches.

How quickly does Betnovate work?
Most patients notice improvement within a few days, with flare-ups settling over 1–2 weeks.

Is Betnovate stronger than Hydrocortisone?
Yes — Betnovate is classed as a potent corticosteroid, while Hydrocortisone is mild. It’s used when weaker creams haven’t been enough.

Can I use Betnovate on my face?
Only under strict medical advice — the skin on the face is thinner and more prone to side effects.

How long can I use Betnovate for?
Typically up to 2–4 weeks. Long-term continuous use is not recommended.
