Overview

Elocon is a trusted potent steroid treatment that brings fast relief from stubborn eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis flare-ups. Containing mometasone furoate 0.1%, it works deep within the skin to reduce inflammation, redness, and relentless itching — helping you regain comfort and control.

Choose Elocon Cream (light, quick-absorbing) for moist or weeping patches, or Elocon Ointment (rich, protective, hydrating) for dry, scaly areas.

This treatment is only available after a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Elocon

Elocon is a potent corticosteroid, meaning it’s stronger than Eumovate but generally better tolerated than ultra-potent options. It is designed to suppress overactive immune responses in the skin, calming inflammation and irritation at their source.

Because of its potency, Elocon is often prescribed for short-term use on flare-ups that don’t respond to milder steroids.

Conditions commonly treated with Elocon include:

  • Eczema (moderate to severe)
  • Atopic and contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis (localised patches)
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Lichen planus and other inflammatory rashes

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected skin once daily (unless instructed otherwise).
  • Use sparingly — just enough to cover inflamed skin.
  • Do not apply to the face, groin, or underarms unless directed by your prescriber.
  • Avoid long-term continuous use.
  • Wash hands after use unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Elocon can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a potent corticosteroid, the risk of side effects is greater with prolonged use or when applied to sensitive skin areas.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Burning or stinging at the application site
  • Mild irritation or dryness

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with longer use or on sensitive skin):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Increased hair growth
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Elocon well when used as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Elocon Cream and what is it used for?

Elocon Cream (mometasone furoate 0.1%) is a potent topical steroid used to treat eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis when milder treatments are not enough. It reduces redness, swelling and itching in thicker or inflamed patches, helping flare-ups settle quickly. It is usually used for short periods to limit steroid exposure.

  • How does Elocon Cream work?

Elocon Cream reduces inflammation in the skin by lowering the activity of immune cells that cause redness, itching and irritation. Because it is a stronger steroid, it works quickly on stubborn flare-ups. It should be used carefully and only on areas advised by a clinician.

  • How do I apply Elocon Cream safely?

Apply a thin layer once daily using the fingertip-unit method. Avoid broken skin and sensitive areas unless advised. Wash hands after use and wait before applying moisturisers so the steroid absorbs properly. Do not use more than recommended, as potent steroids must be carefully managed.

  • What side effects can Elocon Cream cause?

Some people notice stinging, burning or dryness when first using Elocon Cream. Overusing potent steroids can cause thinning skin, visible small blood vessels or stretch marks. Seek advice if the skin worsens or shows signs of infection while using the cream.

  • Can I use Elocon Cream on the face?

Elocon Cream should only be used on the face if a clinician specifically recommends it. Facial skin absorbs steroids more easily and is more prone to thinning and irritation. Milder options are usually preferred for ongoing facial eczema.

  • How long can I use Elocon Cream for?

Most people use Elocon Cream for several days up to one or two weeks. Because it is potent, treatment is kept short, then stepped down to a lower-strength steroid or moisturiser. Long-term or repeated use should be reviewed by a clinician.

  • Is Elocon Cream safe for children?

Elocon Cream can be used in children only on specific areas and for short periods when prescribed. Children absorb steroids more easily, so potent products require careful supervision. Regular review ensures the treatment remains safe and appropriate.

  • Is Elocon Cream suitable for thick, stubborn eczema patches?

Yes. Elocon Cream is often used for thicker, more resistant eczema or dermatitis patches where weaker steroids have not helped. Its potency helps break the cycle of inflammation, but it should be used for short bursts and then stepped down to a milder steroid.

  • Can Elocon Cream be used on hands affected by dermatitis?

Hand dermatitis often becomes thick and dry, making stronger steroids more suitable for short periods. Elocon Cream can help settle severe flares, but the hands absorb steroids differently due to thicker skin, so follow the prescribed duration carefully.

  • Does Elocon Cream absorb more slowly than ointments?

Yes. Cream formulations absorb faster than ointments but not as deeply, which can help control inflammation without the enhanced absorption caused by heavier ointment bases. This makes the cream more suitable for day use or moist skin areas.

  • Can I use Elocon Cream with regular moisturisers?

Yes. Apply Elocon Cream first so it absorbs properly, then use moisturisers afterwards to support the skin barrier and prevent further dryness. Many people alternate both during flares to improve comfort and healing.

  • Can Elocon Cream help sudden flare-ups caused by allergies?

Yes. If eczema worsens after exposure to an irritant or allergen, Elocon Cream can reduce the redness and itching quickly. It is usually combined with avoidance of triggers and frequent moisturising to prevent recurrence.

  • Is Elocon Cream useful between stronger steroid courses?

Yes. Elocon Cream can act as a mid-strength option when stepping down from very potent steroids. It helps maintain improvement without the intensity of stronger treatments, offering controlled anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Can Elocon Cream be used on the scalp or hairline?

Creams are less ideal for hair-bearing areas because they do not spread easily through hair. For scalp flare-ups, lotions or scalp-specific formulations work better. Elocon Cream may be used near the hairline if the area is accessible and not too oily.

  • How do I reduce the risk of side effects when using Elocon Cream?

Use the smallest amount needed, apply only to affected areas and follow the duration recommended by your clinician.  Allow breaks between courses and maintain daily moisturising. Avoid using Elocon Cream on large areas or under dressings unless advised.
