Overview

Elocon is a trusted potent steroid treatment that brings fast relief from stubborn eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis flare-ups. Containing mometasone furoate 0.1%, it works deep within the skin to reduce inflammation, redness, and relentless itching — helping you regain comfort and control.

Choose Elocon Cream (light, quick-absorbing) for moist or weeping patches, or Elocon Ointment (rich, protective, hydrating) for dry, scaly areas.

This treatment is only available after a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will be supplied if clinically appropriate.

What is Elocon

Elocon is a potent corticosteroid, meaning it’s stronger than Eumovate but generally better tolerated than ultra-potent options. It is designed to suppress overactive immune responses in the skin, calming inflammation and irritation at their source.

Because of its potency, Elocon is often prescribed for short-term use on flare-ups that don’t respond to milder steroids.

Conditions commonly treated with Elocon include:

  • Eczema (moderate to severe)
  • Atopic and contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis (localised patches)
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Lichen planus and other inflammatory rashes

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected skin once daily (unless instructed otherwise).
  • Use sparingly — just enough to cover inflamed skin.
  • Do not apply to the face, groin, or underarms unless directed by your prescriber.
  • Avoid long-term continuous use.
  • Wash hands after use unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Elocon can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a potent corticosteroid, the risk of side effects is greater with prolonged use or when applied to sensitive skin areas.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Burning or stinging at the application site
  • Mild irritation or dryness

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with longer use or on sensitive skin):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Increased hair growth
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Elocon well when used as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Elocon Ointment and what is it used for?

Elocon Ointment (mometasone furoate 0.1%) is a potent steroid used to treat stubborn eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Its thick, moisturising base helps soften dry or scaly patches while the steroid reduces redness and inflammation. It is often used when milder steroids have not controlled a flare.

  • How does Elocon Ointment differ from the cream version?

Elocon Ointment is greasier and more occlusive than the cream, locking in moisture and helping the steroid penetrate dry, thickened skin. This makes it ideal for chronic patches, while the cream is better for moist or inflamed areas. Both contain the same potency but behave differently depending on skin type.

  • How should I apply Elocon Ointment correctly?

Apply a thin layer once daily using the fingertip-unit method. Because ointments spread slowly, warm the skin slightly to help absorption. Wash hands after use and avoid applying moisturisers immediately so the steroid is not diluted. Use only for the prescribed duration.

  • What side effects can Elocon Ointment cause?

Potential side effects include stinging, burning or dryness after application. Overuse may cause thinning of the skin, stretch marks or visible small blood vessels. Because ointments enhance absorption, they must be used carefully. Seek advice if the skin becomes sore or infected.

  • Can Elocon Ointment be used on the face?

Elocon Ointment should not be used on the face unless specifically directed by a clinician. Ointments increase absorption and facial skin is thinner, raising the risk of irritation, thinning and acne-like reactions. Milder products are usually preferred.

  • How long can I use Elocon Ointment for?

Most people use Elocon Ointment for a few days up to one or two weeks. Because it is potent and occlusive, treatment should be kept short. Long-term use or repeated courses require medical supervision.

  • Is Elocon Ointment helpful for psoriasis plaques?

Yes. The ointment is well suited for dry, scaly psoriasis plaques because it softens the skin and helps the steroid absorb more effectively. It can be used during short flares as part of a wider psoriasis routine.

  • Can Elocon Ointment be used on cracked or very dry skin?

Yes, but only if the area is not infected. The ointment base protects the skin and reduces water loss, helping cracks heal. If the area is weeping or appears infected, a clinician may recommend an antibacterial treatment instead.

  • Is Elocon Ointment better for winter eczema flares?

Yes. Cold weather and indoor heating dry out the skin, making ointments more suitable. Elocon Ointment offers strong anti-inflammatory action while adding moisture and protecting against cracking and tightness.

  • Can I use Elocon Ointment under clothing or dressings?

Do not use Elocon Ointment under airtight dressings unless specifically advised. The occlusive effect can greatly increase absorption and raise the risk of side effects. Apply sparingly and avoid covering unless instructed.

  • Can Elocon Ointment be combined with daily moisturisers?

Yes. Apply Elocon Ointment first, allow it time to absorb, then follow with a moisturiser to support barrier repair. This combination helps soften chronic skin patches while controlling inflammation.

  • Is Elocon Ointment suitable for lichenified (thickened) skin?

Yes. Thickened eczema or dermatitis often responds well to ointments because they enhance penetration and soften the surface layer. Elocon Ointment is frequently used for short periods on such areas before stepping down to a milder steroid.

  • Does Elocon Ointment feel heavier or greasier than creams?

Yes. Ointments are oil-based and feel heavier on the skin. This makes them ideal for night use or for very dry areas but less suitable for daytime wear or areas prone to sweating. Many people alternate between cream and ointment depending on their symptoms.

  • Can I use Elocon Ointment during flare-ups caused by irritants?

Yes. If eczema worsens due to soaps, detergents or friction, Elocon Ointment can calm inflammation and restore comfort. Removing the trigger and using moisturisers alongside the steroid improves recovery and prevents recurrence.

  • Can Elocon Ointment be used when stepping down from very strong steroids?

Yes. Elocon Ointment is commonly used between high-potency steroids and milder options. It offers strong anti-inflammatory action while reducing overall steroid exposure during recovery phases.
