Overview

When nothing else works, Dermovate is the strongest steroid cream and ointment available to tackle severe skin flare-ups head-on. Containing clobetasol propionate 0.05%, Dermovate is prescribed for stubborn eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis that haven’t responded to weaker treatments.

Available as a cream (light, quick-absorbing) or ointment (rich, protective, hydrating), it delivers intensive anti-inflammatory action where it’s needed most.

Dermovate can only be supplied following a secure online consultation with a UK-registered prescriber, and will only be provided if clinically appropriate.

What is Dermovate

Dermovate is classed as a very potent corticosteroid — the highest strength in its category. It works by powerfully reducing inflammation in the skin, calming redness, itching, and scaling that cause so much distress during flare-ups.

Because of its potency, Dermovate is reserved for short-term use when other treatments (like Hydrocortisone, Eumovate, or Betnovate) have failed to bring the condition under control.

Conditions commonly treated with Dermovate include:

  • Severe eczema and dermatitis
  • Psoriasis (localised, resistant patches)
  • Lichen planus
  • Lupus erythematosus affecting the skin
  • Other inflammatory skin conditions unresponsive to weaker steroids

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer to affected areas once or twice daily, as directed by your prescriber.
  • Use the minimum amount needed to control symptoms.
  • Do not use on the face, groin, or underarms unless advised by a prescriber.
  • Treatment should usually not exceed 4 weeks without review.
  • Wash hands after applying unless treating the hands themselves.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dermovate can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Because it is a very potent corticosteroid, the risk of side effects is higher if it is misused, used on sensitive areas, or applied for long periods.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people, usually with short-term use):

  • Burning, stinging, or irritation
  • Dryness or itching at the application site

Less common (may affect up to 1 in 100 people, more likely with prolonged use):

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Skin colour changes
  • Worsening of untreated skin infections

Most people tolerate Dermovate well when used exactly as directed. If you are concerned about any symptoms, or they do not improve, speak to your doctor, pharmacist, or prescriber.

Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medicine for full details. If you experience severe or worrying symptoms, seek medical advice straight away. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Dermovate Cream and what is it used for?

Dermovate Cream (clobetasol propionate 0.05%) is an ultra-potent steroid used for severe eczema, psoriasis and stubborn dermatitis that has not responded to weaker steroids. It reduces redness, swelling and thickened skin during short flares and is usually prescribed when other treatments have not been effective.

  • How does Dermovate Cream differ from the ointment?

Dermovate Cream is water-based, making it more suitable for moist, weeping or inflamed patches, while the ointment is oilier and better for thick, dry or scaly skin. Both contain the same strong steroid, but the formulation influences absorption and comfort.

  • How should I apply Dermovate Cream?

Apply a thin layer once or twice daily using the fingertip-unit method. Rub it gently into the affected area and allow it to absorb before applying moisturisers. Use Dermovate Cream only for the prescribed duration to avoid side effects linked to strong steroids.

  • What side effects can Dermovate Cream cause?

Side effects may include burning or stinging after application. Prolonged use can cause skin thinning, stretch marks or small visible blood vessels. Because Dermovate is very strong, it must be used sparingly and only on areas advised by a clinician.

  • Can I use Dermovate Cream on my face?

Dermovate Cream should not be used on the face unless specifically directed by a clinician. Facial skin absorbs steroids more easily and is prone to thinning, irritation and acne-like reactions. Milder steroids are normally recommended.

  • How long should Dermovate Cream be used for?

Treatment is usually limited to a few days up to two weeks. Dermovate Cream is not intended for long-term daily use because of its high potency. If symptoms return, a clinician may suggest step-down treatments or intermittent use.

  • Is Dermovate Cream suitable for psoriasis plaques?

Yes, Dermovate Cream can help reduce redness and scaling in severe psoriasis flares. It is typically used on thick, resistant plaques for short periods, followed by maintenance therapy with milder steroids or non-steroid options.

  • Can Dermovate Cream be used on broken or infected skin?

No. Dermovate Cream should not be applied to open or infected areas because strong steroids can worsen infections and delay healing. If the area appears weeping or crusted, a clinician may recommend an antibacterial cream instead.

  • Is Dermovate Cream helpful for flare-ups triggered by allergens or irritants?

Yes. Dermovate Cream can quickly control inflammation caused by soaps, detergents or environmental triggers. Avoiding the irritant and using moisturisers alongside the steroid helps prevent future flare-ups and supports barrier repair.

  • Can Dermovate Cream be used for hand eczema?

Yes, particularly when hand eczema is severe or thickened. Hands often need stronger steroids due to thicker skin, but treatment should still be short. Regular emollients and protective gloves improve recovery and reduce flare-ups.

  • Does Dermovate Cream work faster than moderate-strength steroids?

Yes. Because Dermovate Cream contains an ultra-potent steroid, most people see quicker improvement compared with medium-strength products. It is reserved for stubborn areas where other steroids have not been effective.

  • Can Dermovate Cream thin the skin if used too often?

Yes. Overuse increases the risk of skin thinning, stretch marks and susceptibility to bruising. Keeping treatment short and avoiding sensitive areas helps reduce these risks. If you notice changes in skin texture, seek advice promptly.

  • Can I apply moisturisers while using Dermovate Cream?

Yes. Use Dermovate Cream first and allow it to absorb before applying emollients. Moisturisers soothe the skin and improve results, especially when dryness contributes to flare-ups. Applying moisturiser too soon may dilute the steroid.

  • Is Dermovate Cream safe during long-term management plans?

Dermovate Cream is used only during short, severe flares. For long-term management, clinicians usually recommend milder steroids or non-steroid treatments. Using Dermovate intermittently or as part of a step-down plan can help control symptoms safely.

  • Can Dermovate Cream help with lichenified (thickened) eczema?

Yes. Thickened eczema often requires stronger steroids, and Dermovate Cream can help soften and flatten these areas. Treatment should remain short and be followed by a gentler product to maintain control.
